Tal vez es más fácil ubicar en el mapa a la isla de Madagascar, al sureste del continente africano. Bien, Mauricio está a la derecha de Madagascar y es una isla muchísimo más pequeña.
This year vacations have been something special. The reason is that they were also our honey moon, so we picked a very exotic destination that would let us live different experiencies: Maurice Island
Probably it is easier to find in the map the big island of Madagascar, southeast of Africa. Well, check a bit right to it and you will find among others a much smaller island, there you have Maurice.
Tardamos unas 11 horas desde París hasta el aeropuerto Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam. El viaje es largo y fue un alivio por fin llegar. Tomamos un taxi hacia nuestro primer hotel, ubicado cerca del aeropuerto. Era temprano, alrededor de las 7 am y al llegar a nuestro alojamiento no nos dieron la habitación inmediatamente. De manera amable nos recomendaron que diéramos un paseo por la playa mientras nos preparaban la habitación. Estabamos con sueño, pero no había nada mejor que hacer, así que saliendo a la playa a través de nuestro alojamiento dimos un pequeño paseo. La primera impresión fue espectacular, como se ve en la siguiente foto. Una playa preciosa sobre suelo volcánico negro.
We took around 11 hours from Paris to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam airport. The flight is long and landing in Maurice was a total relief. We took a cab to our first hotel, located near the airport. It was early in the morning, around 7 am, and as we arrived to the place they didn't give us the room right away. Very kindly, hotel staff recommended us to have a walk along the beach while our room was prepared. We were sleepy but there was nothing better to do, so we reached the beach through our hotel and had a nice walk. The first impression was just amazing, as you can see in the following pic. Standing in front of us we had a lovely beach with volcanic ground.
El resto del paseo hasta llegar a la famosa playa de Blue bay fue también increíble. Fueron necesarios entre 10 a 15 minutos para llegar caminando. En el camino se nos unió algún perro playero, desenfadado y juguetón.
A short walk took us the famous blue bay beach. Along the way we got some nice 4-legged company, as you can see in the pics.

Mientras estuvimos en el sur aprovechamos para hacer varias actividades. Por ejemplo, ese primer día que llegamos, después de hacer la siesta fuimos a almorzar a un pueblo cercano (Mahebourg) y de paso conocer su mercado local. El primer restaurante al que fuimos se trataba de uno que combinaba la comida china, con la india y la creole. Yo pedí un beef creole que era una posta de carne en salsa de tomates y cilantro. Samuel pidió un "Magic bowl", que era una especie de arroz al estilo chino con pollo, setas y verduras. Muy rico. El lugar, popular, nos lo recomendó el taxista que se hacía llamar Uncle Joseph. A la derecha se pueden ver otros comensales y arriba, dando sombra, un árbol de mango.
While in the south we did several activities. For example, that first day, after having a nap we went to have lunch to a town nearby and visit its local market. The first restaurant that we tried in Maurice combined the chinese, creol and indian food. I ordered a beef creole, which was a portion of grilled meat with tomatos and coriander sauce. Samuel had a "magic bowl", which was kinda chinese rise with chicken, mushrooms and vegetables. We both liked our food. The place seemed popular, the taxi driver "Uncle Joseph" (as he would introduce himself) recommended it. In the photos, right, you can see other dinner guests and on top a huge Mango tree.
En el mercado vimos vegetales desconocidos. Esos verdes parecían una especie de aguacates raros, pero no tenían nada de aguacates. Más adelante los probamos en diferentes lugares, cocinados, como una berenjena o zuccini.
In the market at Mahebourg we saw unknown vegetables.Those green ones had a weird avocado shape. We had the chance to taste them further in our trip and they were nice. They are used boiled as a hot vegetable dish (more less).
Con nuestros amigos de Mauricio (Daniela y sus hijos Adrian y Ryan en la foto), visitamos el parque Vanille Nature Park. Es famoso por las tortugas y cocodrilos. Ahí conocimos a una tortuga de 105 años, entre muchas otras más jóvenes. Uno las puede tocar en la cabeza, caparazón, etc, y las puede alimentar. Se acercan sin miedo.
With our Mauritian friends (Daniela and her kids Adrian and Ryan in the pics), we visited the Vanille Nature Park. It is famous for its big crocodiles and long lived enormous turtles. There, we met a turtle of 105 years old! among, other a bit younger. One can touch their heads, their shell, etc., and is allowed to feed them. They come close without any fear.
Los murciélagos también fueron impresionantes. Son corpulentos y extremadamente peludos. Todos estuvimos un rato viéndolos y haciéndoles fotos.
Bats were also very impressive. They are bigger and stronger than the regular ones. We were all looking at them and making pictures for a while.
Luego del parque Daniela nos llevó a una zona de pequeños acantilados denominada Gris Gris (pronunciado "gri gri"). El día estaba lluvioso y con mucho viento, o mejor dicho, el día estaba "gri gri". La zona es muy bonita y cuando hay sol mucha gente local va para hacer picnic.
After the park visit Daniela took us to a cliffs area called "Gris Gris". The day was rainy and windy, completely grey. The place is really beautiful. We were told that when the sun shines a lot of local people gets there to have picnic.
Estando en Gris Gris se nos hizo hora de almuerzo. No había mucho de donde escoger aparte de un carrito de helados y un puesto que vendía comida rápida típica: Farata. Es una tortilla de trigo rellena con verduras, pollo o pescado al curry. La versión vegetariana aparte de verduras lleva fríjoles blancos grandes. A mí me encantó, a Samuel, no tanto.
While in Gris Gris lunch time arrived. Our choices were ice cream or a typical mauritian fast food van. We tasted a local dish named Farata. It is a tortilla made with wheat flour filled with chicken, fish or vegetables with curry. Vegetarian version also has beans inside. I liked it a lot and Samuel, after eating the whole thing, told me that he didn't like it that much, lol!.
Luego de Gris Gris los amigos nos dejaron en casa para organizar nuestra próxima salida.
El siguiente día no fue mejor en cuanto al clima se refiere. Decidimos no hacer plan de playa y en vez de eso visitar diferentes lugares. El Uncle Joseph nos llevó a conocer un templo indio famoso de la isla y unas cuantas cosas más.
El templo está al pie de un lago llamado Grand Basin. Tienen muchas figuras de dioses hindúes, dónde muchos de ellos son combinaciones de figuras humanas y animales. La entrada al templo es abierta y tiene diferentes zonas: la parte de abajo frente al lago y luego subiendo unas escaleras hay otro pequeño recinto de culto y un lugar con buenas vistas.
After Gris Gris our friends drove us home to plan our next adventure.
The following day the weather was also crappy. We decided not to do any beach plans and instead visit places. Uncle Joseph took us to a famous indian temple and other sightseeing places.
The temple is next to a lake called Grand Basin. They have a lof of figures of indian gods, where most of them are combinations of human and animal figures. The entrance to the temple is open to visitors and has different parts: the main temple next to the lake and the upper part after climbing some stairs. From top you have nice views all over the lake.
Luego de visitar el templo, Uncle Joseph nos llevó al Black River Gorges Park para dar un vistazo. Desde allí, vimos a lo lejos un bonito paisaje y largas cascadas.
After the temple, Uncle Joseph took us to the Black River Gorges Park to take a look. From there, we saw a nice landscape and big waterfalls.
En horas de la tarde visitamos un parque llamado el Valle de los Colores. Es bonito y se pueden hacer diferentes actividades de aventura tipo tirolina, quads, etc. Nos animamos por los quads para dar un paseo guiado por los alrededores. Nos mostraron unas cuantas cascadas pequeñas a lo largo de la ruta. Más que eso lo bonito era el entorno natural y las vistas.
In the afternoon we visited a park called Coloured Valley. The name comes from the fact that at certain point in the park there is a coloured land. The place is nice and you can make different adventure activities like quads or zip line. We had a guide that took us in a group to show us around a few small waterfalls. The nicest was the natural surroundings and the views.
Pero como siempre, nos entró el hambre, y preguntamos al Uncle Joseph nuestro guía y taxista sobre un buen lugar donde almorzar. Ni corto ni perezoso nos puso a almorzar en el mercado local de otra población cercana denominada Rose Belle. Eramos los únicos turistas del mercado y todo el mundo nos miraba. El Uncle Joseph nos llevó a un puesto de Biryani, que es un arroz blanco mezclado con pollo, verduras y patatas. Todo esto con un guiso o salsa curry. No sabemos si era el hambre, pero nos supo buenísimo. Nos dieron un plato bastante generoso que ninguno de los dos pudo acabar. Samuel hizo las fotos para recordar aquel almuerzo que con suerte no nos generó una gastroenteritis y en cambio nos dejó repletos por un buen precio.
But, as usual, we got hungry and asked "Uncle Joseph" (our guide and driver) about a good place to eat. He recommended us a place in the local market of a town called Rose Belle. We were the only tourist in the market and everybody was looking at us. Our guide took us to have Biryani, which is white rice mixed with chicken, vegetables and potatos. Everything with a spicy curry sauce. Well, we don't know if it was our hunger or what, but we found it delicious. The place was definitively everything but higienic, but we luckily didn't catch any stomach infection and the food price was as good as it gets.
El jueves, día siguiente del mercado Belle Rose, finalmente la lluvia nos dio algo de tregua y lo aprovechamos haciendo un paseo en catamarán hasta la Isla de los Ciervos. El paisaje espectacular todo el tiempo, rodeados de aguas cristalinas. A la mitad del paseo paramos para hacer snorkel y vimos diferentes especies de peces y corales. En el catamarán teníamos bebidas ilimitadas y un almuerzo tipo barbacoa antes de llegar a la pequeña Isla de los Ciervos. Una vez allí, sólo estuvimos 1 hora y media antes de emprender el regreso.
Thursday, the day following Rose Belle market, the rain finally stopped and we did a Catamaran cruise to Ile deux Cerfs. The views were incredible during all the trip, we were surrounded by crystal clear water. In the middle of the way to the island we stopped to do snorkel. We saw several species of fishes and coral. Inside the catamaran we had unlimited drinks and a barbacoa lunch prior to our arrival to the island. Once there, we spent about an hour and a half before we sailed back.
El viernes volvió la lluvia. Ese día, Daniela, nuestra amiga de Mauricio, pasó por nosotros y nos llevó a visitar la fábrica de té Bois Cheri. Vimos la maquinaria utilizada en el procesamiento del té, sin embargo, ese día no pudimos ver el proceso en sí ya que la planta no estaba operativa.
On friday the rain cambe back. That day, Daniela invited us to a guided visit of the Tea Factory called Bois Cheri. We had the chance to see the machines used for the tea processing, however, that day the factory was not running.
Parte de la visita fue una degustación de diferentes tés: con sabor caramelo, coco, especias, etc.
An important part of the visit was the Tea tasting: flavour caramel, coconut, etc.
En horas de la tarde fuimos en dirección a Curepipe, la ciudad donde viven nuestros amigos. Allí almorzamos y nos llevaron a conocer un cráter espectacular de un volcán que se encuentra dormido. El volcán es de los más grandes de Mauricio y se llama Trou aux Cerfs. Se puede caminar en una circunferencia de 1 km alrededor del cráter. Mucha gente de Curepipe va allí a correr y a respirar aire fresco.
In the afternoon we went to Curepipe, the city where our Mauritian friends live. There we had lunch and then we walked around the biggest vulcano crater in Mauritius called Trou aux Cerf. The place is full of green and fresh air.

Por la tarde fuimos a una hípica y tuvimos la oportunidad de acercarnos y conocer a todos los caballos. Los niños los conocían a todos.
And then we went to visit a horse riding club and met all the horses. The kids new them all.
El sábado la levantada fue temprano para hacer la caminata al Mont Brabant. Uncle Joseph nos recogió a las 4.30 am para coger la carretera y estar en el punto de encuentro estipulado a las 6.50 am, dónde con unos guías locales hicimos una ruta que terminó con unas vistas panorámicas del sur y este de la isla.
Next day, saturday, we woke up very early to climb the Mont Brabant. "Uncle Joseph" picked us up at 4.30 am to take the road and get to the meeting point at 6.50 am. There, local guides took us on a hike that finished with amazing views of the south and east coast.
En horas de la tarde, de regreso al alojamiento paramos en la destilería de Ron Sant Aubin. Allí hicimos una visita que incluyó una pequeña granja, una casa dedicada a la vainilla, una casa colonial restaurante y finalmente la destilería, donde nos dieron una degustación de diferentes tipos de ron.
In the afternoon, on the way back to the hotel, we stopped at the Rum Destillery of Saint Aubin. There we made a visit that included a little pet farm, a house dedicated to the vanille and a colonial house. Finally we went to the destillery, where they offered us a rum tasting.
El domingo dejamos nuestro alojamiento del sur de la Isla, cerca de Mahebourg, para ir al este, a las playas de Flic en Flac. En el camino pasamos a visitar una casa colonial llamada Domain des Aubineaux, donde una guía nos explicó la historia de la casa y muchos datos de la historia de la Isla.
On sunday we left our guest house in the soyth and moved east, to Flic en Flac. On the way we visited a colonial house called Domain des Aubineaux, where a guide explained us about the history of the house and the island.
El hotel donde nos quedamos en Flic en Flac era pintoresco. Tuvo sus falencias pero también tuvieron un pequeño detalle con nosotros que fue una cena romántica por ser nuestra luna de miel.
The hotel in flic and flac was good looking. It had a few flaws but the staff had a nice gesture with us which was the invitation to a romantic dinner for our honey moon.
La playa en Flic en Flac es una playa extensa, tranquila y buena para bañarse. Pudimos aprovechar los pocos momentos de sol que tuvimos, ya que para llegar a la playa sólo teníamos que cruzar una calle.
The beach in Flic en Flac es very extense, quiet, and good for bath. We could enjoy the few sunny moments that we had, because to reach the beach we just had to cross a street.
Durante nuestra estadía en Flic en Flac visitamos un parque muy conocido llamado Casela. Es un parque de animales con actividades de aventura. Lo tienen ambientado todo con un estilo de selva, muy cuidado. Vimos muchísimas aves diferentes, felinos y unos curiosos hipopótamos pequeños. Lo más chévere fue un paseo estilo safari, donde vimos rinocerontes, avestruces, antílopes y otros animales de la sabana africana en libertad.
During our stay in Flic en Flac we visited the Casela Park. This is an animals and adventure park. It is all decorated with a forest style, everything carefully placed. We saw plenty of birds, big cats, hippos. The nicest was a safari trip where we saw rhinos, antilopes and ostriches.
Estando en Flic en Flac fuimos en un paseo a ver y nadar con los delfines. Los fuimos a buscar en un bote hacia la bahía Tamarind. Pero nuestro bote era sólo uno en medio de un número grande de botes con turistas en las mismas. Ver a estos animales fue una experiencia única. Samuel se animó a nadar tras los delfines desde el principio. Yo solamente me animé más tarde, pero pude verlos nadando debajo de mí con el snorkel.
También visitamos las 7 cascadas, cerca de Flic en Flac. Tuvimos la suerte de encontrar un guía local que nos llevó para visitar las diferentes cascadas. El entorno fue muy bonito. Tardamos unas 3 horas en la caminata. Era un camino de a ratos intrincado, con muchas ramas y zonas resbaladizas, pero que pudimos hacer de manera segura con nuestro guía.
We also visited the 7 waterfalls, near Flic en Flac. We were lucky to find a local guide that took us to visit the waterfalls. The surroundings were incredible. We took 3 hours to complete the hike. The way was tricky at many points, with lots of trees in between and slippery ground, but we could have a safe walk with the guide.
En nuestro camino al último hotel hicimos una parada por un jardín Botánico al norte de la isla.
While heading north we made a stop in the Botanical garden.
Ya en el hotel al norte de la isla estuvimos más bien tranquilos, disfrutando del hotel.
While in the north, we relaxed completely, and decided only to enjoy the "all inclusive" package in our hotel.
As it can be seen from the pics we only ate, and ate, and ate and drank, and went a bit to the beach, did also a little bit of beach activities.
Y nuestro penúltimo día, nos despedidos de Daniela y los niños. Vinieron a visitarnos al hotel y luego nos llevaron a conocer playas en el norte.
The day before we left, Daniela and the kids visited us in the hotel and then took us with the car, to visit other beaches in the north of the island.
Y después de haber visto la belleza de esta isla, decidimos que algún día no muy lejano tendríamos que volver.
And after we saw and enjoyed the beauty of this island, we decided that one day, not to far, we would go back.
